Activities:

  • For today it’s programmed a guided transfer from San Jose to Turrialba Valley. This route is full of natural attractions. During this day you will have the opportunity to visit from the highest volcano in Costa Rica (Irazu Volcano) to the Turrialba Valley, which is known by its rivers and lakes.
  • On the way to the Irazu Volcano National Park, you will pass through the Costa Rica’s most important agricultural regions, where potatoes, cabbage, carrots and dairy goods are all produced.
  • At the volcano, a brief walk along the craters will allow you to learn about the different eruptions – each has its own characteristics. Just imagine all the beautiful views that you can observe from this elevation.
  • After visiting the Irazú Volcano, you will descend to the Orosi Valley, home of the Orosi Church. Within the walls of the oldest church in Costa Rica, you will experience the presence of the Costa Rican Spanish predecessors and their strong religious heritage.
  • The Orosi Valley is also characterized by the verdant hillsides which are filled with coffee plants. The rushing Reventazón River bisects the valley and empties into Lake Cachí. Here you will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant located on a hill overlooking the Cachí Lake.
  • In the late afternoon you will visit the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE: One of the most important centers for tropical studies). There you will find species ranging from diminutive parasite plants and orchids to robust stands of bamboo. Get your camera ready to capture the multicolor palette of colors: bougainvilleas, heliconias, gingers and many more tropical beauties.

Overnight: Turrialba Valley – (B, L)

Day 3 Turrialba Valley - Tortuguero National Park

  • During the morning the journey will continue to the local area dock in the Siquirres area, where the boats are waiting for you to transfer you to the Tortuguero National Park.
  • A two hour boat ride will take you through the canals sheltered in the jungle of the rain forest. From the boat, you will be able to admire the unique flora and fauna of this area.
  • Upon arrival there will have short briefing of the hotel and the area followed by lunch.
  • In the afternoon you will visit the village of Tortuguero where you will learn the lifestyle of local residents and the significant conservation efforts that some NGOs have developed to protect sea turtles that come to spawn each year along the 22 miles of protected coastline.

Overnight: Tortuguero – (B, L, D)

Day 4 Tortuguero National Park

Activities:

During this day and depending on the weather conditions, you can enjoy a guided hike through the jungle where you will learn how the different animals, insects and birds interact with forest plants, thus achieving a perfect balance of each species, or you can explore the secondary canals of this paradisiacal place, where you can see different species of mammals, birds and reptiles.
  • Tortuguero offers a full contact with Mother Nature. Much of the National Park extends along its unspoiled beaches that serve as refuge for spawning of the sea turtles, this event occurs between the months of July to September (an extra cost activity).
  • Rest of the day at leisure.
