Hanga Roa is the main town on the island, Hanga Roa is a small community next to the sea where nearly all the hotels and the principal services on the island are located. Visitors stay here and visit the archaeological and historical sites on this fascinating island from here.

Activities:

• Full day excursion The Arrival of Hotu Matu’a (6 hours): Visit Anakena beach, located 18kms from Hanga Roa’s downtown, situated here are some amazing temples or Ahus.
• Then tour Ahu Te Pito Kura, it only has one Moai, however it measures 10 m/30m and weighs 90 tons making it the largest Moai that has been raised on a platform. Also in this site a very sacred stone is located, the Ahu is named after it. It has been said that this stone was brought from the home island of Hiva by the first Rapa Nui king Hotu Matu’a.
• The excursion continues to Rano Raraku, one of the most interesting archaeological sites on not only Rapa Nui but in the entire world, here we can find 396 Moai (statues) in the quarry which is an extinct volcano that has an amazing fresh water crater. Lunch included.
• Afternoon visit to Ahu Tongariki, one of the most visually stunning sites on the island which shows how the ancient people were part of a true megalithic culture.
• Finally tour Ahu Akahanga; The Platform of the King; It’s believed the grave of the first king of the island Hotu Matu’a can be found in a cave in Akahanga.

Activities:

• Half day excursion The Power of the Birdmen (3 hours): Visit Ana Kai Tangata, a cave that has many paints made from mineral pigments found on the island. The painting depicts the Manutara bird. The arrival of this bird in spring would initiate the Tangata Manu competition.
• Next continue to Ranu Kau that was the second of the three main volcanoes to erupt about 2.5 million years ago. It has a height of 310m and a huge crater of 1.6km in diameter and a fresh water lagoon 11m deep. Next to the volcano is the ancient ceremonial city of Orongo, where exist the greatest concentration of petroglyphs. There are pictures of the Tangata manu birdman, the creator god Make.
• Half day excursion looking towards the stars (3 hours): Visit to Ahu Huri, one of the last Ahu (altars) to be restored by Dr. William Mulloy, It is believed to be astronomically oriented such that the sun on the morning of both the winter and summer solstices rise directly on the facade of the moai as it stands on its Ahu(altars).
• Next visit Ahu Akivi, an archaeological site, that was the first scientifically restored site during the 60’s. It’s a ceremonial place, particularly interesting not only for its location (center of the island), but also by the legends that are known around seven moai.
• The tour continues to Ahu Vai Teka, an archaeological site that was apparently set up to be oriented towards the rising sun of equinox (beginning of spring and autumn). In the vicinity of this ahu a large number of caves and waterholes a very important source of freshwater for the ancient populations are found.
• Finally we will visit Puna Pau, site located east site of the town of Hanga Roa, in a small crater of red scoria.

Activities:

• Half day excursion The First Ahu (altars) (3 hours): The tour start with the visit to Vinapu, one of the oldest sites on the island (AD600), the stone masonry found on the Ahu Tahira has a fit so perfect it is often compared to that found at Cuzco in Peru.
• Next visit Hanga Poukura archaeological site located southeast of Hangaroa. It is an excellent example of an Ahu (open-air altar) belonging to an era of great turmoil on Easter Island (1680-1864 AD), at a time when the statue-cult lost importance and the moai (statues) were toppled, giving rise to new cults, among them the Tangata Manu (birdman).
• Finally visit Hanga Tee (Vaihu), where it’s possible to see 8 toppled Moai resting face down in their ancestral homeland.
• Half day excursion The Twilight of the Moai (3 hours): Visit the Father Sebastian Englert Museum, which has an original moai eye on display and is located in the Tahai sector, 2 km. from the center of Hanga Roa.
• Next vist Ahu Tepeu, one of the largest and best preserved ceremonial centres of the west coast. Among other things the largest foundation of a Hare Paenga (house in the shape of an upturned canoe).
• The tour continues on to Tahai, an old ceremonial complex that dates back to the 6th century. It includes three different Ahu. Ahu Ko Te Riku, stands 4.73 meters high, has an estimated weight of 20 tons.
• Finally visit Hanga Kio’e, located 3 km north of Hangaroa’s downtown. Legend claims that the island’s leader, the Ariki Henua, was proclaimed king at this ceremonial site.

We invite you to visit the neuralgic sites that give life to the people of Rapa Nui: see the entertainment centre in the world’s most isolated inhabited site: Te Pito O Te Henua. Visit the Handicraft Market, the Catholic Church, the commercial center and two local bays, Hanga Roa and Hanga Piko.
